So I submitted my first idea not to long ago to the All Categories search, and it has reached level 7!  I am a married father of 4 that has always been a tinkerer, and have made quite a few things for my personal use to solve problems that I had, but have never had something that I thought was good enough to pursue into production.

I am taking making it to level 7 on my first try as a good sign, but don't really know how often ideas reach level 7 and then die.  I have read quite a few posts and know lots of ideas get all the way to R8 and still don't get a deal inked for various reasons, so I am trying to stay realistic, but my excitement is still pretty high.  :)

In the meantime, I have a provisional patent on my invention, and I know EN won't file for a utility patent until/unless a license deal is struck, so my question is, should I go ahead and work on (and pay for) a proper patent with a patent attorney, or should I hold off for a bit?  I have until January of next year to file, so I guess I am not in too big a hurry.  Anyone have any experience with this, or have done something similar?

Love being here and reading of others that are trying and succeeding at creating something.  I think just seeing a product that came from my head on a store shelf would be really neat, so I am cautiously optimistic.  The CVS nasal aspirator made me chuckle, how I would have LOVED that when my kids were little, those stupid bulbs never worked at all.

Good meeting everyone here!

Hi Edward and welcome!

Regarding your PPA, we cannot provide legal guidance - it is always our policy to recommend that our users consult with their patent attorney for best next steps.

Best of luck and congrats on the G7!

Welcome Edward,

It sounds like you have a good idea if it made it to 7 that quickly. I can not speak of how many submissions make it to level 7 or pass/reject at that point (probably not the majority). If you have until 1/2019 to figure out your I.P. and what is necessary, you probably could hold off a bit. The patent laws can be quite complicated, so true knowledge of the subject is beneficial, you will obtain that knowledge by paying for it with money or countless hours of reading. : ) If I understand correctly, with E.N. if you are at level 7, then they have a 6-month time-frame of marketing your concept and you should not market it further yourself in that time period.

With that being said, you should obviously have ownership of your P.P.A. / intellectual property. It may be possible to renew/re-file your PPA if your 1-year period is expiring and you have not publicly disclosed the concept to the public.

It's impossible to say or offer accurate advice for you without knowing your circumstances. Maybe you can write a patent yourself and file for a modest amount of money? Maybe you have a lawyer in the family that can assist you? Maybe you have an extremely complex idea that would require a legal professional(s) to complete? Hard to say.

Best of Luck!

How long does it take to get through each stage?  I have an idea in with a friend I guess as a coinventor to the open search, I've never actually submitted anything on my own.  We do have a prototype.  It has the green check mark on stage 5, so it's at final IP review.  What can I expect form here?  It took about a month and a half maybe two months to get the green on stage 5, is that slow, quick or normal?

I guess I'm curious to know what the normal time frame is and if you can get an idea by how fast it's moving to what their level of interest?

Hi David!

This is a hard question to answer because it varies greatly. A lot of variables are in play, such as: how many searches are currently running on Edison Nation (EN), how many presentation dates are coming up, when you submitted your idea, and more.

The time it takes to review your idea depends on the search specifics, as well as the volume and complexity of submissions. In general, stages 1 through 3 move quickly. We typically begin reviewing stages 4 and beyond after the search has closed. After stage 4, EN is conducting extensive reviews so the time frame of movement seems to be longer.

For sponsored searches, please expect that all concepts will be reviewed up until the presentation date. This presentation date is usually set a few weeks following the close of the search. After the presentation has been given to our partner, they have between 45 days and 6 months to decide which ideas they'd like to move forward on.

The EN Team works very hard to move this along as quickly as we can, and we promise to keep you updated along the way. Join the forums where you'll usually likely find a topic dedicated solely to a search. Here, you can collaborate with fellow inventors who are going down the same path as you! And don't forget to check for movement on your dashboard.

Best of luck!

David,

Just as a point of reference, my initial submission was Feb. 9th on mine.

Moved into stage 6 (passed stage 5) on March 1st (I think this is where you are now), moved into stage 7 on March 22nd, so about 3 weeks in the Final IP review stage.

I think it does vary greatly, I also have a prototype, and submitted a few videos demoing the product. Also, my invention is a very simple, low tech, easy to understand and demonstrate product.

Patience seems to be the key, and the open search is the most frustrating thing because there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of info on open searches, and I think the time frame tends to be a bit looser since there are no deadlines per-se.

Glad to hear there are others out there with lots of questions.

Ed

Just a general point of interest for anyone following along.  Just got an email today (3/27) moving it out of Step 7, so I am officially G7!

Quick turnaround there (entered into Step 7 on 3/22).

Now the real waiting begins.  Really need to focus on my actual job, but is a little tough right now, so exciting. :)

@Chase Fisher - c'est moi!

David Cyr and I partnered on a submission for an invention we both like so much that we will probably self-produce if we don't get a license deal via EN.
